They share similar nuts and bolts, with water being sucked from the ocean through a huge hose attached to a jet ski and blasted back out again. The power of the water is controlled by an operator on the jet ski, which has to have at least 100hp to operate the Flyboard.

He’s becoming known for his spiral diving stunt, pawing and clawing and paddling his way down to the depths of the deep end of his family’s pool, then coming up for air with his prized toy in his mouth.

According to Michel André, a marine bioacoustician at Barcelona’s Technical University of Catalonia, noise pollution in the ocean is having a much broader effect on marine life than previously thought. The finding suggests that low-frequency sounds from human activities can affect squid and other cephalopods, not just whales and other marine mammals, which have long been thought to be vulnerable to such pulses.

In the early 2000s the remains of giant squid were found off Spain’s Asturias province. In each case, the creatures’ bodies appeared soon after ships had used air guns to conduct low-frequency sound-pulse exercises in the region, in some cases for oil-and-gas prospecting efforts.

Scientists investigating the giant squid remains at the time found evidence of extensive bodily damage, including mantles reduced to pulp, bruised muscles, and lesions in statocysts. These fluid-filled organs rest behind the creatures’ eyes and help giant squid maintain balance and position.

“With this study, we now have proof” that low-frequency sounds can harm cephalopods, said Guerra, a marine biologist at Spain’s Marine Research Institute who was not involved in the current study, which will appear in a future issue of the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.

Maybe we should be coming up with, or using other methods of prospecting. I get cranky with a bit of construction noise… imagine getting physically blasted with sound? Ouch.

The philosophy behind this is definitely flawed (in the global sense), but nonetheless a cool novelty item ($30).

I just hope they don’t ever come up with a beer pint glass version of this. Caution: filling the glass more than you need could result in spillage.

By this time next year, MIT scientist Daniel Nocera, founder of SunCatalytix, claims that he expects to be able to generate enough energy from a bottle and a half of plain tap water (even waste water) to power a small house.

In an effort to bring resources to low-income people of the world, the Tata Group, along with Nocera,  have found a way towards one of science’s holy grails—to imitate photosynthesis, the process by which plants breathe, and produce power while doing so.

The team stuck an artificial cobalt- and phosphate-coated silicon leaf into a jar of water and managed to create power—with such precise efficiency, that it surpasses today’s solar panels. The technique mimics photosynthesis by splitting hydrogen from water to generate power from the sun.

Nocera’s research is still in the preliminary stages, but if it pans out as hoped, a swimming pool-sized container refreshed each day with new water could meet the entire planet’s electricity demands. So no matter how preliminary the research, Tata stands to reap big rewards if it pans out.

Is water going to be more valuable than gold? Hope is rarer today because of the promises and claims that do not come to fruition or turn out to be false or exaggerated. Let’s just hope this deal is the real thing.
