How about a transparent LCD that soaks up the light in the room to power itself.

Samsung is betting that you and I will not only be amazed, but intrigued enough by this idea to make it worth buying. The company has tweaked their existing transparent LCD technology, it is now energy efficient enough that it can be powered by ambient light alone. That’s right, just the light in the room, no cords and no batteries to replace.

A prototype 46-inch display with 1920 x 1080 resolution and ten-finger touchscreen capability was recently shown of at CeBIT 2011.

No word on how the photon-powered LCD compares to existing HD monitors in terms of brightness, refresh rates, or color reproduction, but a muted picture is a small price to pay for cutting the electrical cord forever.

Thanks to a plastic encapsulation method, the super thin flexible AMOLED displays can be rolled up like a newspaper and can even survive impacts with a hammer, all while displaying bright and colourful characteristics. The 2mm thick display is expected to be used in the next Galaxy S with a 4.5-inch display and an 800 x 480 screen resolution, which Samsung claims is four times that of the previous most flexible AMOLED prototype constructed, comes courtesy of a new plastic substrate that can withstand the 450-500 degree Celsius temperatures required in the manufacturing process.

The other version of AMOLED on display achieves its transparency by replacing some pixels of the display with blank, transparent elements, Samsung has managed to produce displays that offer the power consumption, brightness, color saturation and contrast benefits of AMOLED while allowing you to figuratively look through the display. Transparent displays compromise resolution, but the effect is amazing.

It’s going to be targeted at larger screen applications such as TVs and PC monitors. The 19-inch transparent AMOLED display prototype sports a qFHD (quad Full High Definition) resolution. This is a non-standard resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels arranged in a 16:9 aspect ratio that gets its name from being four times the resolution of 1080p.

When it’s all said and done, this is simply amazing technology…The future is going to be a wild ride.

[Cheers intomobile.com]

We finally get offical pictures, specs and video of Microsoft’s and Samsung’s next generation of Surface. Just unveiled at CES, the next gen features PixelSense technology, which gives LCD panels the power to see without the use of cameras.

The Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface will be available to businesses in 23 countries later this year.

Of course, you’re unlikely to see one in your home any time soon: they cost a whopping $7600. So just sit back and watch the video…cause it’s probably the closest any of us are going to get to it.

Slim device. The new hardware is 4 inches thin.

A richer visual experience. With the rich color saturation from a full HD display and a larger screen, Surface offers a compelling, immersive visual experience that draws people in.

A vision-based touch experience. With PixelSense, Microsoft Surface sees and responds to touch and real world objects.

Touch-enabled from start to finish. With Windows 7 and Surface 2.0 , there is no need for a keyboard and mouse for setup and configuration.

New Quick Controls. Venue staff can adjust basic settings like volume, brightness, and input source.

More customization options. An improved configuration utility means you can quickly make changes to background images, configure applications, and modify settings without getting into code.

Easier remote administration. Power shell scripts are easy to use and create, so Surface can be deployed in an enterprise setting.

Streamlined development for touch. The Microsoft Surface 2.0 platform makes development easier with applications that run on Microsoft Windows 7 touch devices and with enhanced capabilities on the Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface.

Everybody seemed to be glued to Samsung’s booth at FPD 2010 in Japan , as it was the place to be with nothing much else going on except a few new styles of 3D glasses.

The Korean Giant managed to show off some particularly wicked new advancements in technology including:

Transparent AMOLED Display- A transparent AMOLED display was showcased in a prototype 14-inch notebook. The resolution was quite low at 960 x 540 pixels (78 PPI) and 250 cd/m2 brightness.

Flexible Display - A very cool looking display, which demonstrates a capability to flow into smooth and attractive curves. The AMOLED flexible ones still offer impressive colors on a tiny 2.8 WQVGA resolution (240×400 166PPI). Specs are also impressive with a 16.7M color depth, 250 cd/m2 brightness and here as well as a stunning 100,000:1 contrast ratio and a color gamut superior to 100% of the NTSC Color space.

Foldable Display – An interactive folding mount which is opened and closed the device at the push of a button. The 5.3-inch display (animated) that was foldable in the middle, has a 960 x 800 resolution (235 PPI), 26.2K colors, 250 cd/m2 brightness, 100K:1 contrast, > 100% NTSC color space.
