Remember the 80’s; every break-dancer in site had the ol’ cassette deck boom box sitting on their shoulder. Playing inside those boomboxes was most often a mix tape on a TDK brand cassette.

Since then, we haven’t heard much of anything from the cassette tape maker, well TDK is back with a Three-Speaker Boombox set for an official debut at CES in January.

The $499 device boasts a streamlined design compared to the 1980s-era originals, but it’s still unmistakably a boombox and, according to Crave’s early hands-on, it pumps out a surprising amount of sound from its 35 watt RMS speakers.

The box contains three drivers a 15-watt woofer, surrounded by two 10-watt stereo speakers with edge-driven tweeters between them.

The 80’s nostalgia, Electric boogaloo meets the future box will also feature at iPhone/iPod support (via USB), AM/FM radio, USB stick (MP3, AAC, WMA), and a slew of aux input options, including RCA, minijack, and a 1/4-inch instrument input that can be blended with the other audio for instant karaoke/block party high jinks.

However, this thing may just be a colossal failure…if I am expected to lug this huge thing around, why not carve a place to set my iPhone in.

Would it be too much to ask for TDK to design some kind of cassette eject like contraption to house your portable music player? Not necessarily a docking port per-se, but just some place where you can store your PMP safely and securely so if you’re, say, at the beach, you don’t have to plop your device into the sand next to this box.
