Aside from being the biggest bridge in the world, this new firebreathing Dragon Bridge is outfitted with a modern lighting system that includes 15,000 Philips LED lights that make it brilliantly change colors…but wait there’s more, cause firebreathing and a spectacular light show are boring…the dragon is also capable of releasing bursts of fire or sprays of water from its mouth.

The bridge is located in Da Nang, Vietnam and opened on March 29, the 38th anniversary of the liberation of Da Nang City, the 666 meter long, 37.5 meter wide bridge has six lanes for traffic and two pedestrian sidewalks.

In all, it cost $85 million to build, which seems like a small price to pay for the bragging rights of having a city with a bridge that breathes fire, spits out water and changes colors.

Developed by German lighting designer Ingo Maurer, over three-plus years with help from an award-winning lighting designer, you can now buy individual 10′x2′ strips of red, white, or green, LED Wallpaper that is integrated with hundreds of 60W diodes.

It somewhat resembles a computer circuit board until you hit the switch…this is when the magic happens, the 3D ‘cube’ pattern of LEDs will light up full blast or just a subtle glow for those ‘get in the mood’ moments.

The leaves hide a complex system of misting, showering and LED and LED lighting adjustable to different situations and can be folded along the trunk to optimize resistance to poor weather conditions thanks to a motorized system.

The controls are all embedded in the trunk for easy access, and an optional remote control lets you work its many functions using your iPhone or iPod Touch through Wi-Fi…open/close the leaves, turn on/off the water, set the LED chromatherapy lighting, and crank up the sound system.

The effect is admittedly kind of cool, if you’re in a Sci-Fi movie, but the device looks painful, irritating and unsafe. The makeup system is made up of very thin wires that are insulated and held within wire frame. Using a LilyPad Arduino or flat-pad microcontroller as balancing weight, the wires stay suspended in place in the vicinity of the eye.
