An image is worth a thousand words, so there is not much I can say about this photo, other than it seems to be causing a stir throughout the World Wide Internet.

According to Yellowstone National Park Ranger Michael Keator, the photo was snapped by a park employee in April 2010, between the Madison Junction and Old Faithful, near the Fountain Flats area. It clearly shows a grizzly bear chasing it’s dinner, while the bison  desperately tries to jump on the back of the truck.

Original estimates of the size of the two behemoths put the bison in the range of 1600 pounds– and the grizzly at more than 800 pounds.

So does the picture portrait a half mauled Bison?

The Bison looks emaciated and weak, probably from starvation and seemed to have fallen prey to the Grizzly.

However, the photo is from early spring, so it’s not uncommon for Bison to look like that (unhealthy) as a result of severe frost bite, poor nourishment, disease, and so on throughout the winter.
