Believe it or not, the government is having a bit of a problem keeping up with the amount of money required to keep our highways from crumbling into dust, so in an all out guerrilla war tactic, the government is proposing the development of technology that would allow total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) to be tracked, reported and taxed.

The report added that not only will you get stuck with $3.50 (est) per gallon gas when you fill up, you will get jacked with the VMT tax.

“If VMT taxes were collected at the pump, each time fuel was purchased, information would be sent from a device in the vehicle to a device at the filling station.”

A type of mileage monitoring system would have to be worked out. AAA says it is currently reviewing the report, and it hasn’t yet taken an official stance.

“The bottom line is, there are a growing transportation demands and a growing need for revenue to fill those demands,” said Karen Morgan, an AAA Spokesperson. “This is just another option they’re looking at how to fund that transportation need.”

So let’s get this straight: First you are taxed on your income, then you are taxed on the purchase of a vehicle, then you pay a yearly fee to register that vehicle, add in the yearly fee to “test” the vehicle, you pay tax on the fuel for the vehicle and now they want to add on a new tax based on mileage? If the government is having cash flow problems perhaps a look at spending would be a better option instead of further taxation.
