The year 2027 and imagine a world in which cyborgs – part human, part machine – are the norm…Now let’s back up a few years and find out how it all began.

Rob Spence, A film-maker who lost his eye during a shooting accident as a child has turned his prosthetic one into a video camera.

The technology used is the same as in a wireless lapel microphone with a transmitter and receiver. However, the wireless transmits a video signal rather than a sound signal from the tiny camera inside Rob’s prosthetic eye.

The device is not connected to his brain and obviously hasn’t restored his vision. But it records everything he sees, sending what he’s looking at in real time to a computer.

According to Rob, technology is already advanced and the possibilities are endless in the future.

“People say no one would ever cut off their own arm and replace it, but if the technology gets there – and it looks like it will – people will think about it.”

This is impressive, but can it fire laser beams?

Brazilian police will use futuristic ‘Robocop-style’ glasses fitted with facial recognition equipment to identify and root out troublemakers at the 2014 World Cup.

A small camera fitted to the glasses can capture 400 facial images per second and send them to a central computer database storing up to 13 million faces. The system can compare biometric data at 46,000 points on a face and will immediately signal any matches to known criminals or people wanted by police.

Generally, the glasses are optimized for viewing people within about 150 feet, but they can apparently be adjusted to recognize faces from up to 12 miles away. So, if you weren’t paranoid about somebody watching you before, now’s a good time to start.

Operation a success, we told how NYU professor Wafaa Bilal was going to surgically install a camera into the back of his head. Then we told you how he had secretly went through with the operation without telling anybody and wasn’t going to reveal the semi-implant until December 15th (the countdown).

Say hello to Professor Cyborg Bilal whose new implanted camera will start snapping photos every minute, 24 hours a day, and then transmit them via the Internet to a new museum in Qatar.

The camera is not really surgically implanted into his head it is similar to getting a piercing, in fact the ‘operation’ wasn’t even done in a hospital, but instead at a piercing studio that specializes in body modification.

Following an incision, three titanium plates, each with a post attached, were inserted underneath a large flap of skin on the back of Mr. Bilal’s skull. The skin was then reattached, concealing the plates but not the posts.

The base for the 10-megapixel camera, which is just less than two inches in diameter and features automatic adjustment and color, was then screwed onto the posts. Though Mr. Bilal received local anaesthesia, he described the procedure as painful, and said he remains unable to bring himself to watch a video recording of the implantation.

Bilal reached an agreement with NYU to put a lens cap over the camera when he’s on school grounds, so as not to disturb the notoriously private college kids at NYU. But once he’s off campus, the lens cap comes off too, and it’s snap snap time.

So you can pretty much bet that Cyborg Bilal won’t be invited to any parties, who would want a freak in their house snapping pictures of your every move. You really find out who your friends are when you implant a camera in your head.
