According to CBSnews.com, the Obama administration is currently drafting what it’s calling the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, which Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said will be released by the president in the next few months.

“We are not talking about a national ID card,” Locke said at the Stanford event. “We are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a dozen passwords, through creation and use of more trusted digital identities.”

Details about the “trusted identity” project are remarkably scarce. Last year’s announcement referenced a possible forthcoming smart card or digital certificate that would prove that online users are who they say they are. These digital IDs would be offered to consumers by online vendors for financial transactions.

I’m sorry. There’s no way in hell that the President or anyone else in the government is taking away my RIGHT to anonymity. This will NEVER happen. Not in a million years. This must be stopped…Revolt!

This quote from the “National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace” document says all you need to know about this:

“The Identity Ecosystem also requires organizations to maintain auditable records regarding the use and protection of personal information and compliance with applicable standards, law, and policies.”

Every organization that uses this system is required to keep logs of these ids, which means agencies of the Federal Government will have their nose in your activities.

The document talks about a user’s privacy but only the context of the private sector. It no where mentions privacy protection from eyes of the Federal Government, and that is intentional.

Once this “voluntary” system is in place, the next step will be to make it mandatory and force websites and services (ie. Skype, VPN) off the Internet that don’t implement it for all their users.
