Day Time

They’re heeeerrre…. just a few months ago Romain Jerome announced a licensing deal with TAITO Corporation authorizing the manufacture of a Space Invaders-themed timepieces–and now they have arrived!

The two cosmically cool 78-piece limited edition watches featuring the iconic Space Invaders characters on the dial hand-drawn pixelated strokes in a 3D format, one for night time use and the other for daytime. Each one will feature a steel case “coalesced with fragments from the Apollo 11 capsule.” So these invaders have actually been in space to a certain extent.

As for the cost…it’s speculated to be in the $10,000 to $20,000 range, unfortunately it doesn’t play the game.

The cassette tape has become impractical in today’s gigabyte era, but this wristwatch shows how sexy and classy the ol’ tape can be. The Mixtape Watch, by EOS, replaces the standard watch face with an anodized black stainless steel cassette. Inside this cassette, two tape-like dials (one for hours, one for minutes) spin to tell the time.

With a learning curve similar to earlier models of Ziiiro watches, you intuitively learn a new way of telling time, just by looking at the resulting color mix – thankfully, the company’s website helpfully walks you through how to read them.

Expected to ship in late May, each watch will set you back at just under $200.

I think I’ll stick to my old Casio watch…this looks like too much rocket science to me.

The $250, 000 Harry Winston watch has a case made of 18k white gold and sapphire crystal. According to Denis the system is durable enough for daily wear, just don’t play golf with it on.

As of today, I’m gonna carry a machete with me 24/7 and if I see any hands that has a watch that looks anything like this, I’m gonna slash it, pick it up and run.

Sick and tired of losing or forgetting his USB key, Olivier came up with the idea of combining it with a watch that takes telling time to a whole new level.  Thinking outside the box, this novel way of telling time was first introduced in his Solaris Series watches, but has a definite learning curve, that will take some time to become accustomed to (video bellow).

An obvious fan of futuristic/sci-fi movies, Konect not only adds the functionality of having the luxury of transferring data from the watch to any device via USB ( or vice versa) at any time, but with it’s cool looks, a definite conversation piece at next office party.

Designed for Japanese company Tokyoflash, Olivier claims Konect will have similar playback functionality as the iPod Shuffle, with Bluetooth capabilities.

The extremely complicated mechanics inside the Meccanico dG was first shown off in 2008 however this time around will see a white analog and digital display, matte black titanium housing, black alligator leather straps and studded with 111 rubies.

The time information is displayed by an array of 23 horizontally and vertically positioned microsegments, while the guts can be best described as a dense cluster of microsystems featuring extremely elaborate cam and gear assemblies and consists of over 651 components.

Pricing is expected to be over $150.000. Entrance to the BaseWorld show, which is a forum for announcing new products, will cost 60 Swiss Francs and held from March 24 – 31.

Thank goodness they made it in white instead of Tron blue.

Unlike most traditional solar powered devices that try to hide the Photovoltaic cell, the Sol attempts to draw attention to it by encasing it in the same polyurethane strap as well as giving it the same profile as the time is displayed in.

Sol is available in a variety of flavors, such as orange, green, pink, black and white. Priced at $130.00 (£80.00).

Not a big fan of the bright colors, but the white one is kinda growing on me.

For thetrue environmentalist, Los Angeles based Wewood, have designed two collections of watches made from all natural wood and free of artificial and toxic materials…meaning they are completely hypo-allergenic.

‘Date’ and ‘Crono’ use  miyota movement and are crafted using various hardwoods, such as Ebony (black), Red Wing Celtis (brown), Maple (beige) and Guaiaco (Army). Buying a watch also help reduce your carbon footprint as Wewood, in collaboration with American Forests, will plant one tree for every watch purchased.

From the minds of Russian design studio Podvaal, ‘revolve’ is a three-piece watch, around whose rings the hours, minutes, and seconds are each independently displayed. The fact that all three of the magnetic bracelets can be taken apart and configured in any way brings back memories of the Da Vinci Code, sort of.

This unique looking watch can be operated via LED through a battery or fully mechanical and to top things off you can pick/choose the colors you want or the type of material you want the watch made of…yes even in Tron blue.

No word on pricing as of yet, but I am sure it is going to be way out of my price range.

Luckily for us they didn’t go for the Tron blue color, instead opting for neon green, which accentuates the space age looking propeller.

The name La Clé Du Temps, which translates to “the key of time,” falls back on a silly gimmick in which the user can alter time by slowing it down or speeding it up, by switching the crown on the left of the watch. The cylinder at the bottom extends outwards with a vertically mounted tourbillon which drives the watches movements.

Not much more is known in terms of technical details, as Hublot is keeping tight lipped on that until March 2011. However, you can probably expect a hefty price tag when the watch is finally released.
