Call this what you will, morbid, bizarre, beautiful, creepy, or ‘insert adjective here’… Photographer David Maisel has photographed what was left of the deteriorating portions of copper canisters of unclaimed human remains from the Oregon State Insane Asylum.

Yup, cans filled with people whose cremated bodies were left behind.

Library of Dust depicts individual copper canisters, each containing the cremated remains of patient from a state-run psychiatric hospital. The patients died at the hospital between 1883 and the 1970’s; their bodies have remained unclaimed by their families.

The oxidation of the canisters has created something unexpectedly colorful in this otherwise grim scene. To Maisel, they speak to the transformative quality of death, asking us to meditate on the matter within the containers.

This notion examines all gazes, from narcissism within the subject, to objectification by the viewer. Working with the Pop Idiom Boyarde re-contextualizes familiar sub-conscious Scopophilic images of all types of art from The Pre-Raphaelites to Lichtenstein, to The Golden Age of Comics, Pulp Fiction novels to icons of photography and cinema. In doing so she unravels the history of gender stereotype and by painting onto the female body for her canvas, she transforms high art into low art, back into high art, by embracing the wonderful vulgar progress of kitsch.

“Onement VI” from abstract expressionist painter Barnett Newman sold on Tuesday at a Sotheby’s auction for $43.8 million dollars.

OK, OK, the 8.5ft by 10ft dark blue canvas with Newman’s distinctive ‘zip’ running through the center, was painted in 1953…but its still just a blue canvas with a white line.

Until yesterday, Onement V held the previous auction record for Newman. It sold for $22.4 million last year.

If Newman was still alive, his next painting…a canvas painted red with a white line, would probably fetch $50 million.

Photographer/sculptor Nina Levy draws amazing images on her sons’ napkins before sticking the napkins in with their lunch. Each day, the boys eat with dinosaurs, monsters, and the occasional superdog.
