Japanese Fart Scrolls – ‘He-gassen’
No you didn’t just misread the title…it turns out there is a scroll or collection of twelve small Japanese prints depicting ‘He-gassen’ or ‘The Fart Battle’ depicting officials in combat, farting at other people, farting at cats, farting off of horses, farting into bags – just farting everywhere.
Can’t be true… Yup, in the 90s, a collection of fart scrolls sold for $1,500 at Christie’s auction house.
Did our Japanese friends make something funny into something very serious…….and also funny?
Apparently, similar drawings were used to ridicule westerners towards the end of the Edo period, with images depicting the westerners blown away by Japanese farts.
You can find the rest of the fart scroll, without the private parts blacked out in its entirety, on Waseda University’s website here.)
