130 Year Old Billy the Kid Photos Fetches $2.3 Million
Remember Henry McCarty, AKA – Billy the Kid… This rare Billy the Kid photo was believed to have been taken in 1879 or 1880 in Fort Sumner, and is the only authenticated photograph of the infamous Wild West gunslinger.
Florida billionaire William Koch, an energy company executive and well-known collector of art and American West artefacts placed the winning bid in person for a whopping $2.3 million on Saturday night. Koch’s winning bid was actually $2 million, but a $300,000 “buyer’s premium” was tacked on, bringing the total selling price to $2.3 million, an auction spokeswoman said.
The photograph, believed to have been taken outside a saloon at Fort Sumner, New Mexico, depicts Billy the Kid with his 1873 Winchester carbine in one hand and a Colt revolver at his hip.
The outlaw was born Henry McCarty but was also known as William H. Bonney and Henry Antrim. Popular history has him gunning down 21 men, but many historians say the number was closer to nine. He later died at the hands of another sheriff when he was only 21.
The guy didn’t look anything at all like Emilio Estavez.
